Manipur is a mountainous state of Northeast India characterised by a remarkable contrast between rugged hill ranges and the central Manipur Valley . Its physiography is closely related to the eastern extension of the Himalayan mountain system and the wider Indo-Myanmar mountain region . The physical landscape of Manipur can broadly be divided into two major physiographic units: The surrounding hill region The central Manipur or Imphal Valley A smaller valley and plain area occurs in the western part of the state around the Barak and Jiri river systems .
