Districts of Mizoram 2026: Headquarters, Area & Map

District map of Mizoram showing all 11 districts, district headquarters, Aizawl state capital, boundaries and neighboring regions

Mizoram has 11 administrative districts in the official directories checked for this 2026 guide: Aizawl, Champhai, Hnahthial, Khawzawl, Kolasib, Lawngtlai, Lunglei, Mamit, Saitual, Serchhip and Siaha. Each district has a headquarters town bearing the same name. Older sources may spell Siaha as Saiha. District directory.

For students, researchers and travellers, the district names are straightforward; district areas require more care. Some official pages still display figures for undivided districts, while newer districts have separate profiles. This guide therefore separates the current district list from historical area figures, explains the three newer districts and provides a practical map-reading guide.

Mizoram District List and Headquarters

The following table lists all 11 districts alphabetically. Regional descriptions are broad orientation aids rather than legal boundary definitions. For the physical setting behind the administrative divisions, read the geography of Mizoram .

District Headquarters Broad Regional Association
Aizawl Aizawl Capital region; administration, education and urban services
Champhai Champhai Eastern Mizoram; India–Myanmar borderland and agricultural landscape
Hnahthial Hnahthial Southern interior; one of Mizoram's three newer districts
Khawzawl Khawzawl Eastern interior; one of the newer districts
Kolasib Kolasib Northern Mizoram; important gateway toward Assam
Lawngtlai Lawngtlai Southern Mizoram; international-border and connectivity region
Lunglei Lunglei Southern interior; major regional administrative and service centre
Mamit Mamit Western Mizoram; forested hills and borderland landscapes
Saitual Saitual Northeastern interior; one of the newer districts
Serchhip Serchhip Central Mizoram
Siaha Siaha Southern and southeastern Mizoram; older records often use Saiha

The MoEFCC state dashboard independently records 11 districts, citing the Local Government Directory dated 29 August 2026. The date matters because a district count should always be connected to the administrative period being described rather than copied indefinitely from an older textbook. Count reference.

Why Some Books List Only Eight Districts

Many Census tables, older maps and general-knowledge books use Mizoram's earlier eight-district arrangement.

That list contains:

  • Aizawl
  • Champhai
  • Kolasib
  • Lawngtlai
  • Lunglei
  • Mamit
  • Serchhip
  • Saiha

Hnahthial, Khawzawl and Saitual were not separate reporting districts in those older tables.

This does not make the historical data wrong. It simply means the geographical units were different.

A useful rule is to record three things together: district name, reference year and boundary arrangement.

New Districts of Mizoram: Notification and Operational History

The three newer districts are Hnahthial, Khawzawl and Saitual. Official administrative records refer to their notification on 12 September 2008, while their later operational establishment is associated with 2019.

New District Headquarters Important Point
Hnahthial Hnahthial Developed as a separate district administration from the earlier southern Mizoram arrangement
Khawzawl Khawzawl The present district must be distinguished from the earlier subdivision or town of the same name
Saitual Saitual Notification, operational establishment and later jurisdiction orders represent different administrative stages

The expression “new districts of Mizoram” therefore does not mean that these districts were created in 2026.

For MPSC preparation, this distinction is useful because questions may separately ask for the notification year, operational year or present number of districts.

District Areas: A Clearly Dated Historical Reference

The following table reproduces area values from section 1.4 of the Mizoram State Disaster Management Plan 2012. It uses the earlier eight-district framework.

Important: These are historical district areas and should not be presented as a complete 11-district area table for 2026.
Historical District Area (sq km)
Aizawl 3,756
Champhai 3,185
Kolasib 1,382
Lawngtlai 2,557
Lunglei 4,536
Mamit 3,025
Serchhip 1,421
Saiha 1,399
State Total 21,081
Area-data rule: Do not add the areas of Hnahthial, Khawzawl and Saitual to the old eight-district table because their territories were already included within their former parent districts. Doing so would count part of Mizoram twice.

Published Area Figures for the Three Newer Districts

The following figures come from individual official district or government profiles. They are useful for reference but should not be treated as a harmonised statewide area dataset.

District Published Area Source / Scope
Hnahthial 1,030 sq km Mizoram Police – Hnahthial DEF profile
Khawzawl 1,152.53 sq km Khawzawl District Disaster Management Plan 2023
Saitual 1,757.34 sq km Saitual district profile

For a current statewide comparison, all district areas should come from the same boundary dataset and reference year.

Largest and Smallest District of Mizoram: Which Answer Is Correct?

In the historical eight-district table above, Lunglei is the largest and Kolasib is the smallest.

That answer is correct only for the administrative structure represented by that historical table.

A present-day 11-district ranking should use one consistent modern boundary dataset. Mixing an undivided parent district area from an older source with a newer district area from another source can produce a misleading ranking.

For competitive examinations, always check whether a question specifies Census 2011, an older handbook or the present district structure.

Mizoram District Map Guide

A useful Mizoram district map should show:

  • All 11 current district boundaries
  • District headquarters
  • Neighbouring states
  • Bangladesh and Myanmar
  • International boundaries
  • North arrow
  • Legend
  • Map reference year
Map Feature Correct Interpretation
District polygon An administrative territory, not an ecological or linguistic boundary
Headquarters symbol Shows the administrative town; it does not indicate district size
River A physical feature that may cross several district boundaries
International boundary Separates India from Bangladesh or Myanmar
Internal district boundary Separates two civil administrative districts
Reference date Shows which administrative arrangement the map represents

For orientation, locate Kolasib toward northern Mizoram, Aizawl in the northern interior, Mamit toward the west, Champhai and Khawzawl in the east and Lunglei, Hnahthial, Lawngtlai and Siaha farther south.

Mizoram's mountainous terrain strongly influences travel between district headquarters. Read the physiography of Mizoram to understand why road distance is often much longer than straight-line distance.

District Administration and Autonomous Councils

A civil district and an Autonomous District Council are not the same administrative unit.

Mizoram contains:

  • Lai Autonomous District Council
  • Mara Autonomous District Council
  • Chakma Autonomous District Council

These should not be added to the 11 civil districts as though Mizoram had 14 districts.

The word district appears in both terms, which can cause confusion. For examinations, keep civil districts, autonomous councils, subdivisions and development blocks as separate administrative categories.

Administrative boundaries also differ from ecological regions. Wildlife habitats and forest landscapes cross district boundaries. See the biodiversity of Mizoram for the ecological context.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many districts are there in Mizoram in 2026?

Mizoram has 11 administrative districts.

What are the headquarters of the 11 districts of Mizoram?

The headquarters are Aizawl, Champhai, Hnahthial, Khawzawl, Kolasib, Lawngtlai, Lunglei, Mamit, Saitual, Serchhip and Siaha.

Which are the new districts of Mizoram?

Is Kolasib the smallest district of Mizoram?

Kolasib is the smallest district in the historical eight-district area table shown above. That result should not automatically be treated as the ranking of all 11 present-day districts unless the comparison uses a uniform modern boundary dataset.

Why do Mizoram district area figures differ between websites?

Different sources may use older district boundaries, undivided districts, different measurement precision or different reporting units. Always check the reference year before comparing areas.

Are Siaha and Saiha different districts?

No. They refer to the same district. Siaha is commonly used in current official district references, while older documents often use Saiha.

Sources and Data Notes

The district list reflects official directories reviewed for the 2026 guide. Area figures are separated by source and boundary period and should not be combined into one current state total unless they use the same administrative boundary dataset.
